About the Artist

What! How many musicians can be associated with one pronoun like Lil Jon can? His signature interjection appears on practically every hip hop track since 2003. Well almost. The master of crunk is a scene stealer everywhere he goes, whether onstage with his East Side Boyz, producing Usher's breakout "Yeah!," or refusing to get Punk'd by MTV. This year he will release Crunk Rock, which true to the title will bring crunchy guitars and pounding beats to rhyming club hoppers. Pioneering a new sound for a new century must be hard work, but Lil Jon is always all grillz.

Dossier Style Snapshot

Do you have a favorite article of clothing? Brand new white tees.

Where do you pick up ideas about style and design? From old fashion 70's & 80's stuff that I transform to fit myself in today's world.

Do you have a favorite band or musician whose style you really liked when you were starting out? Did that play a role in the development of your style? All early hip-hop like Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane and also punk bands like The Sex Pistols, Ramones, Bad Brains.

What does Playboy mean to you? When do you recall discovering Playboy? Hmmm, well my first memory is looking at magazines that my uncle had in the house. Of course I was sneaking a peak at the boobs and bush! But it means quality pretty women. I remember looking at other magazines also but Playboy had the best looking girls! The women were flawless and every man dreams of three things:
1. Going to The Playboy Mansion
2. Meeting a Playmate
3. Meeting Hef himself.
Wow I have done all 3! I can go climb Mt. Everest now.

Were there bands or MCs you heard at a certain point in your life that made a huge difference in how you thought about music? Run DMC, I was a huge fan of them. They were hardcore and they made records to rock the party and they were the only rap group on MTV. They made me want to be a boy-breakin, DJ'n all that.

Who put on the best live show you ever saw, and why was it so good? Busta is always sick cause of his energy and how he murders the crowd. I saw the Black Eyed Peas, their show is crazy. Their shows have hella energy and when will.i.am breaks it down and plays drums with a mic in one hand it's serious. Prince is also incredible. Him and his band are insane and tight as fuck.

Do you have a pre-game ritual or a superstition before or during shows, or to get ready to record? No rituals. I just go chill in my dressing room till it's my time and just flip the switch when its time for me to hit the stage.

What was the best show you ever played, and why? What makes a good show from your perspective? I don't know my best show because I have done so many. I would say hot 97 Summer Jam NYC '04 and '05. We murdered Giants Stadium. I was the underdog and came in with all kind of special guests and left the crowd tired. When the crowd is tired you know you had a good show.

At what point do you know a song is good? Do you ever have an idea you just know is going to kill on the dance floor? I don't know how to explain when a song is good. You just feel it.

What's the most exciting thing you've done in the past year as a result of your music career? The most exciting thing was co-hosting Pimp My Ride International because I got to travel to countries I have never been to and I have conquered new fans by doing the show since it airs in 30 countries. The ratings came back incredible.

What's your favorite place on earth? My bed

Favorite driving album? NWA Straight Outta Compton, or shit, any NWA album.

Favorite bedroom album? Jodeci-Greatest Hits

Do you think the album format is dying, and if yes, how will you deal with the changes? I think the CD will be gone in the next 5 years. It's becoming so easy to get music with out leaving your home. Major chains like Tower Records are closing which is a sign that CDs are dying.

How have the technology boom and the internet affected the way you approach promoting your music? I have been paying attention to the internet boom for the last couple years and I try to stay ahead. I noticed back then that new media was very important in promoting your product because you could promote to so many people so easy. I get very involved in MySpace and also have done some big promotions on MySpace debuting music. In one of my promotions I had 600,000 plays on one song in 24 hours.
